CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns will be wearing new uniforms in 2015, and that may not be the only thing new at FirstEnergy Stadium.
The team is reportedly looking to add cheerleaders to the sidelines starting next year.
“I think it would be sweet, I think it would be pretty sweet,” said Browns defensive back Joe Haden.
The Browns have had numerous pep squads in the past, most recently in 1971. Now there is a Cleveland Scene report out that the Browns could be adding cheerleaders in 2015.
“I think it’s a very good idea that we should have cheerleaders because they always say any time you have pretty girls it will always attract people,” said Robert Ward of Warrensville Heights.
The Browns are one of six teams in the NFL without cheerleaders. Some fans believe it’s been too long.
“The rest of the popular teams have them, and they are very popular with me, and I vote yes on that on,” said Gommie Tommy Grant, of Cleveland.
Since 1999, the Browns haven’t had a whole lot to cheer about on the field. Some fans believe the cheerleaders could add to the fan experience.
“I think it’s fantastic. I think Cleveland could benefit from cheerleaders. It could make the game a little bit more interesting,” said Ron Zambetti, of Parma.
“Anytime they are losing, the girls can cheer us up,” Ward said.
The thought of bringing back the pom poms has some Browns fans fired up — they’re even willing to try out for the team.
“Hopefully, maybe I could be one of your cheerleaders, I cheered all through high school so it’s definitely a goal of mine,” said Janet Stokes, of Warrensville Heights.
Yet, there are other fans who say forget about the side-show — put a product on the field that will have those in their seats doing the cheering.
“I think what Cleveland Browns fans want is a winning team and it would be awfully cold for those cheerleaders at most of the Browns games to be honest,” said Rosemary Taft-Milby, of Bath.
The Browns have yet to comment publicly about adding cheerleaders.
